Eve often visited Caleb at the school. He had decided it was better to have a home separate from the grounds for the summertime, but he insisted on living in the castle without her. She tried not to take in personally. He was busy, and it left her time to paint. Sometimes he did come out to the house for a weekend, but more often she came to him for an afternoon and maybe overnight and went on her way. She did as he asked by now, it was safer that way. And easier to pretend they still had a fairytale marriage.
It wasn't like she was bad in bed, she was sure of that, and she had to be pretty enough... but why did he have to cheat? Him being away just made it seem even more separate and distant, a threat like the wind, comforting or a tornado. One was far more memorable, but it was human nature to try and pretend only the best things were true.
It was mid-afternoon on a saturday and here she was, ready to see him. She went to his office and ran her fingers over the dusty cover of a book on archaic spells. The room was empty, but he would be here, or perhaps in his adjoining rooms.
Eve lay her bag on a student desk and uncoiled her scarf. She picked up a bit of chalk and started to draw as she waited.
