Nessie spent more than her fair share of time in the hospital wing. This probably had a lot to do with the fact that she almost never considered the consequences of what she was doing until after she did it. It was a stereotypical Gryffindor trait, and one she happened to have, though she doubted it was dependent upon her house. She was hard-headed enough that she'd do anything to prove someone else wrong even if she knew they were probably right.
Today's visit was prompted by a dare, which was also a fairly common thing for her. She'd been dared to go skinny dipping in the Black Lake. It would've been great to say that something interesting had happened at the lake, but she hadn't actually made it that far. In her haste to actually complete this dare, Nessie had shown everyone exactly how clumsy she was. She'd caught the toe of her boot in a root and tripped. When she'd tried to stand, she'd found that her foot wouldn't support her weight. Fortunately, her fellow Gryffindors, who had been following her to make sure she actually did what she was dared (and who knew she wouldn't mind being seen doing it) had enough sense to get her to the hospital wing. Apparently, her ankle had broken, and she was currently waiting for some foul-tasting potion to weave the bones back together. Not exactly how she'd planned on spending her day. She leaned back against the paper-covered pillow behind her and muttered a string of curses. Either she'd annoy someone or one of her friends would actually decide to visit her.

September was gradually cooling, bringing in the brisk winds of autumn. Unfortunately, that also meant there was a minor outbreak of the flu. Juniper must've gotten it from someone. Madame Pomfrey was well prepared with cauldrons full of Pepperup potion she distributed all day. Juniper didn't much care for the stuff. It made her insides feel unbearably warm and itchy, like she was somehow wearing a wool sweater over her vital organs. It also, and this wasn't just June, made steam come out of her ears. Juniper, walking down to the infirmary sniffling and slightly feverish, could only imagine the kinds of jokes Noah would pull when he saw her. You're so hot you're steaming. Lame things like that. Or maybe he'd just hug her and ask her how she was doing.
Juniper smiled to herself; she liked thinking about Noah.
When she came to the infirmary, she actually came across Madame Pomfrey running out - apparently because the supply of Pepperup potion was depleted. June was told to wait. So Juniper walked over to lay on one of the bed's - her sinuses were swollen and her fever was making her break into a light sweat. Her head felt like it weighed a ton. She noticed another girl already occupying one of the beds. It took a second for her to recognize her - that was Venessa Sorin, a trouble making Gryffindor that June, as a Slytherin prefect, tried to avoid. June smiled vaguely, not quite looking at her, but acknowledging her presence. Then she collapsed onto a bed diagonal from Nessie's.

Given the time of year and the way that students are always so ready to share their germs, Nessie shouldn't have been surprised to find that she was not alone or to see the way that Madame Pomfrey was running around like a chicken with her head cut off. What she was somewhat surprised by was the fact that everyone else seemed to be getting out of here much more quickly than she was. She briefly wondered if Madame Pomfrey kept a stock of slower-working potions to keep troublesome students at bay, but dismissed the idea as her ankle began to burn, indicating that the potion she'd been made to drink was finally working. "It's about time," she muttered, trying to pretend it didn't hurt.
Pretending would have been easier if she'd had any sort of distraction, and she soon found herself mentally berating her friends, though she knew they were probably in class, which was where they belonged. Her eyes roved from bed to bed, looking for someone, anyone to talk to. A few minutes later, Madame Pomfrey hurried out of the room, probably in search of some potion she'd run out of. Nessie smiled as she heard the woman tell someone to wait. That meant someone else was here. And that they were going to be stuck here. For a few minutes, at least.
She waited impatiently for the person to make their way into the room, but when she saw who it was, Nessie suppressed a frown. With the exception of Liam, to whom she was developing a rather unwelcome attachment, Nessie hated prefects. It was a rule of hers. Granted, she hadn't hated them until she'd started getting into trouble with them on a regular basis, but that was beside the point. She turned her eyes toward the ceiling and tried to ignore the pain, which had gone from hot to searing in a matter of moments. Her eyes watered, and she found herself muttering curses again. This wasn't going to work. Finally, she sat up and cast a rather disdainful look toward Juniper. "You mind infecting someone a little more fun so I have someone to talk to?" she grumbled. Juniper hadn't ever done anything terrible to her, really, but Nessie was determined to dislike her on principal. Besides, being in pain certainly lent itself to being moody.

Juniper, also in pain (though a more throbbing, aching all over kind of pain,) was in no mood to be berated by a bratty Gryffindor for no particular reason. She had been laying on the bed, fists pressed against her temples, and eyes closed. When she heard Nessie speak, she opened her eyes and looked around, just to double-check that Nessie was indeed picking on her. Then she rolled her eyes, "I'm sorry I'm not up to your standards of entertainment." Juniper said casually, not really feeling any insult on her part. Still, what nerve of Nessie to think that Juniper was here willingly, let alone for her amusement.
Again, Juniper wasn't feeling insulted, but if Nessie was going to keep prattling on, this was going to be difficult. "How about I go sneeze on the first boy I see," Juniper offered conversationally. "You'll screw anyone, right?"
That was unusually harsh, but again, Juniper just wanted to shut Nessie up.

Of course the fact that Juniper had come to see Madame Pomfrey coupled with the fact that she had now taken up residence in the bed diagonal to Nessie's indicated that she wasn't here for pleasure. But Nessie never had been one to consider things like that. It took too much effort. Besides, she would have much preferred that the world bend to her whims. In this case, though, it seemed that the world had already determined not to let things go her way. Nessie rolled her eyes at the girl's response and might have let the conversation drop were it not for Juniper's next comment.
It was common knowledge that Nessie slept around. Granted, she wasn't doing so much as of late, but it had been a typical behavior for her for a couple of years now. But she didn't appreciate it much when people pointed it out. Unless they were offering to sleep with her. Obviously, that wasn't June's intention, and Nessie immediately too offense to her implication. The only person who got away with calling Nessie a slut was Brett, and, while June hadn't actually said the words, she might as well have. Nessie let out a huff and scooted up in her seat so she could better see the other girl. "First of all, I do have standards. Or have you not heard about those yet?" she offered, shaking her head as though June had somehow disappointed her. "Really. I thought you were smarter enough to get all your information... And since you're obviously misinformed, I'm not really particular about gender." It wasn't an important factor, but Nessie wasn't really quiet about it, either. Honestly, she was hoping to make Juniper uncomfortable. She was generally pretty good at fostering discomfort, and if she couldn't find someone to flirt with, she figured she could at least make that her goal.

Unfortunately, getting Nessie to shut up had not worked. Juniper wasn't sure if she actually believed it would or not, but she was so dearly hoping that it was a disappointment nevertheless. She went back to closing her eyes and trying to block out the world. When Nessie's voice grated against her ears, Juniper didn't even bother looking at her. Eyes still closed, Juniper merely heard what Nessie.
None of it Juniper cared to know, actually. It was hard to care about anything in her condition honestly, and Juniper didn't know Nessie nor want to know Nessie (what with their house rivalry, there was no chance of them being friends, so what was the point?) The bisexual tidbit sparked her passing intrigue for a moment, but even that wasn't a situation changing fact - it wasn't like now June was going to sit up and chat with Nessie about the kinds of girls she liked.
Eyes still closed, Juniper responded in an apathetic tone of voice, "Oh, sorry. My mistake. I'll be sure to pay more attention to every detail of your riveting life, as I am so invested."

Juniper was obviously miserable. It didn't take a rocket scientist to see that she wasn't feeling well. It also didn't take one to see that June wasn't exactly fond of her company. Yet again, though, Nessie wasn't really concerned with whether June wanted her company or not. She was bored, and talking to someone, however unpleasant they happened to be, was at least distracting her from the pain in her ankle. Besides, as much as she wasn't a fan of Juniper, anyone could tell that the girl was beautiful, and having this not so riveting conversation was giving Nessie an excuse to stare.
She'd just about decided that Juniper wasn't going to bother continuing their conversation based on the fact that she hadn't even bothered to open her eyes when the other girl's voice finally broke the silence. Yet again, she found that the girl's words offended her. Nessie practically lived for attention, so hearing that someone cared so little about anything related to her had a way of frustrating her. "Christ. It's no wonder you don't get laid," Nessie responded. She knew next to nothing about June's sex life, but maybe it was enough to get some sort of response out of her, and that was all Nessie really needed at the moment.

That comment did actually bother Juniper. Not because it rung true, but because if Nessie said that with so much confidence, she must've thought she knew something. Because Nessie couldn't possibly know anything about Juniper, it must've been a circulating rumor. Juniper didn't advertise her sex life, unlike some others, so if people were saying she didn't get laid, they probably meant it as she wouldn't get laid. Like she was too unattractive, or weird, or just unappealing - because she was muggleborn, maybe. People in her house couldn't let go of that fact.
Juniper had a problem with self-worth. She couldn't help it - there was no one around growing up to tell her that she was special. Add also that she was never adopted, and therefore unwanted. The only reassurance she got was from friends, and friends had habit of leaving (which was a natural occurrence in life, but was extremely difficult for June.)
Juniper grimaced, but refused to openly glare at Nessie. Looking at her would make June ever angrier. If she kept her eyes close, it made the problem seem less real. "Because you would know if I did." Juniper retorted angrily.

She hadn't actually expected to strike a nerve, but the idea that she'd managed to say something that could actually bother Juniper was more than a little amusing. Nessie smirked as she watched the other girl suppress her anger. I wasn't making it any less obvious, of course, and Nessie found herself wondering why June bothered. As far as she knew, she was only mildly amusing, exceptionally annoying, and a bit insulting. She was pretty sure she hadn't done any real damage.
June's comment made her chuckle. One good thing about sleeping with most of the guys and some of the girls at school was that it gave her the opportunity to learn things she might otherwise never know about her classmates. Granted, she'd only been grasping at straws this time. She had no idea whether Juniper was getting any or not, but her attitude certainly made it seem like she needed a good shag. Even so, Nessie wasn't going to let on the fact that she'd made that accusation up all on her own. If June thought people would be talking about her sex life, she could go right ahead with that belief. "Trust me. I know more about most of the students at this school than they know about themselves," she replied. In some cases, it was true. Past lovers had a way of talking about things that were both mortifying and painfully true. And in cases where Nessie didn't actually know anything, she was pretty good at coming up with general guesses that were close enough to hit home. "Besides, if you were getting laid, I expect you'd be in a better mood."

If Juniper's eyes were open, she'd have rolled them. If Vanessa was imbued with all this supposed knowledge, it would've maybe developed her as a person. The only impression that June was getting was the Nessie was a bratty little girl who wanted attention. No maturity or self-reflection whatsoever. "I doubt that, but it's reassuring you think so highly of yourself. I was starting to think you lacked in self-confidence. All the sleeping around and all." Juniper retorted. It was starting to feel weird that she still had her eyes closed. Before she trying to ignore Nessie, but now they were seriously starting to argue (or at least June was.) Juniper, still laying down, turned her head slightly and looked at Nessie dead on.
At Nessie's next comment, June actually scoffed and laughed a little, looking up at the ceiling in disbelief. "Right, because my mood has nothing to do with the fact that I'm dying and you won't shut up. Sorry, but I don't think even a good shag could make you seem less annoying." Juniper turned her head back towards Nessie. "Besides. Sex isn't always answer - or don't you know that?"
