«history» Discovered as a baby in Godric's Hollow by Muggles shortly after the New Year, Juniper Hollow was given her name because she was found in close proximity to a Juniper tree in Godric's Hollow. Determined to have been only a few days old, it was decided that her birthday should be December 31st. Everything about her was arbitrarily decided. The only interesting and well meaning sentiment that she received was by one of the foreign caretakers -- she tagged June with the middle name Dahlia, which apparently meant destiny. She stayed in the orphanage on the outskirts of Godric's Hollow for a while, until the orphanage became too crowded and she was moved to another facility in London.
She grew up in the fluctuating company of many other children who came and went. The one consistent familiar face she had was that of Clara, who ran the orphanage. June followed Clara around for most of her childhood and helped with household chores. Even when Clara would get riveted with her soap operas, Juniper would sit on the floor and try to follow along with the convoluted storylines. Once or twice, June watched a sex scene because Clara simply forgot that June was there. When Juniper was old enough (six) to go out about the city alone, she spent a good chunk of her time at the public library reading.
But enjoyed playing outside in the park most of all. She could jump rope, swing on swings, and play tag with other kids. Sometimes parents took their kids away from her company, which was always hurtful.
She met James playing outside once, and she really liked playing with him. His mom was also very nice to her, which was incredibly surprising. She started walking all the way to Potter house almost daily to see if James could play. A few times she was invited to play inside and given treats. She grew extremely attached to the Potter family because they were so wonderful and so nice to her. On holidays, she would sneak into people's gardens to pick flowers so that she could give the Potters a bouquet. When the weather became too cold, she looked for coins discarded on the streets so that she could buy them a box of chocolates.
In school, she deviated towards the rougher crowd in which most of the other kinds in the orphanage were. They introduced her to the idea that if she really, really wanted something, she could simply take it. She stole little things from time to time, and also smoked socially. But she got good grades and never developed any serious addictions. And she continued to visit James when she could, because he was her one and only best friend.
She did have some strange and unexplainable occurrences growing up. For example, when a shop keeper caught her pickpocketing and confronted her, midway through his threat he seemed to have forgotten what he was saying and told her to have a nice day. Also, she found a sickly black kitten when she was seven. Everyone said that it was a lost cause and had little time left. But June took care of the kitten, wrapping it in her blanket and giving her milk. Somehow, the kitten not only survived, but also grew to be extremely agile and strong, and never left June's side.
And then she got her Hogwarts letter, and at first she thought it was a practical joke. But as per policy, a Ministry official visited her. Harry Potter heard of this development, as he worked in the Ministry, and the Potters took her along to Diagon Alley. Juniper was flabbergasted at first to find out they were magical, but then she was elated that she and James would be going to the same school. That day was the best ever - especially Flourish and Blotts and all those books and when she and James got their wands. And then she was surprised again to find out that Harry Potter was actually a legendary figure in the wizarding world.
The Potters took her to train station, too. June was excited and worried about the prospect of Hogwarts. James and other students running about the train told her all kinds of things, and mostly she was afraid of not being placed in a House. She had never belonged anywhere - what if she didn't actually belong in Hogwarts, either? The anticipation of sorting almost ruined the feeling of sheer marvel at the beauty and magic of Hogwarts. But then she sat on the stool, in front of everyone, and the Sorting Hat yelled out "Slytherin!". What relief! She didn't know what that meant, but she looked over at the table that featured one of her favorite colors - green - and everyone was clapping as if they were actually happy to have her. Her chest swelled with happiness she had never felt before. But then the moment was ruined when she looked over and saw a strange expression on James's face. And when he was sorted, he ended up at a different table away from her.
Needless to say, their friendship disintergrated after that, because of the tension of circumstances. Furthermore, members of her own house ostricized her when they found out she grew up as a Muggle. After a while, when she proved herself a quick learner, winning points often, that faded. Still, she was no one's favorite. Despite that, she loved her House. It was the first place in which she actually belonged, whether people liked her or not. The classes at Hogwarts were wonderful. The castle was unbelievable. But she only had a few friends and had lost the friendship of the one person she valued. Life had never been easy, though. At least she could concentrate on succeeding academically.
She spent the summers in London working odd jobs so that she could have spending money on textbooks and supplies, and the occassional magical items from Hogsmeade. She still felt eternally grateful to the Potters for fascillitating her transition into the magical world, and as such, still sent them chocolates and flowers on holidays. But she didn't go looking for James -- she feared he didn't like her anymore.
