"You're kidding me right?" Brett said as they walked into the hallway. "He was flirting with me before I picked James, and I'll like a less bad-ass version of you. Plus, good guys are like good girls, they want the bad girls like they want bad boys." Brett said. It was true, hot dangerous women were about 50 times hotter than a hot good one. Everyone knew that.
"And lets face it, you were on his lap and he was totally upset when James and I showed up. He was into you." Brett didn't want to then say that Nessie blew it by inching away and inviting them over, but that was probably because she had just realized she kind of liked him...
They marched toward the staircases and Brett frowned slightly, she hated that they moved suddenly, one day she was sure it would move as she stepped off and go plummeting to the floor.

Maybe Brett had a point about good guys liking bad girls. But the thing about it was, guys only liked girls who had reputations like Nessie's for one reason; because they knew she was a sure bet. She'd known that when she'd first started sleeping around. She'd just never thought to mind.
Nessie whirled around at the top of one of the magical staircases and let out another huff. "No, Brett. He was into the fact that he was gonna get laid. That's how it goes. Guys don't like me. They like sex!" She was loud enough that Nessie was sure even the Ravenclaw's in the library could hear her at this point, but she didn't care. Her lower lip trembled a little and she tried to ignore the tear that had accidentally slipped out. This was just perfect. Liking guys, getting angry, crying... Who was she becoming?!

Brett was shut up by that. She had no idea what to say and she felt so bad for laughing earlier. Nessie had never seemed so worked up before. She had always liked her reputation and the way she lived her life. This crush was really turning into a big deal. Nessie really liked Liam. Brett saw the ear and listened to the reverberation of her words. Many students who were out had stopped and were looking at them. Brett's face had gone soft and she could only say, "I'm sorry Nessie." Of course, Nessie did this to herself but Brett felt bad for her.
"I like you." Of course, not romantically and she wasn't a guy, but still. Brett wasn't sure who she could say did like Nessie in a romantic way, and saying bullshit like you'll find him someday just seemed to insult Nessie's intelligence and life experience.
Brett walked up and tried to usher Nessie onto the platform for the current floor and just get her away from prying eyes.

It wasn't until after her outburst that Nessie realized how many people were actually in the hallway. Great. Just great. Her shoulders slumped and she took an an entirely defeated look. It definitely wouldn't take long for rumors to start swirling now. "It's your job to like me," Nessie mumbled, allowing herself to be guided onto the stairs. "Obviously I don't have to tell you not to tell anyone," she added, her eyes traveling back to the students they'd just left in the hallway. "I'm sure they'll get around to it before you'd have a chance."
Exhausted and frustrated, she didn't bother to say anything else on the way to the common room. By the time they got there, though, she remembered that she was trying to avoid it. At this point, she was too tired to trek back to the library, though, so she turned back to Brett. "I don't want to go in," she whined. Of course, she didn't want to just stand here, either.

"I had to like you before it was my job," Brett reminded her with a smile as they walked. Nessie was the best friend Brett ever had and she didn't have too many friends before her. They got into trouble together, but she was always happier with her friend and she hated to see the usually together girl a mess.
When they reached the common room, Nessie dug her heels in. Brett just hugged her. This was turning into a tender day for them. It was a little weird. Brett let go and raised her eyebrows and pointed at Nessie with determination.
"Okay, you are a fantastic bitch, so lets just march in there and go right up to the dorms. They can eat it up." Brett said as a way of pumping her up. It would be like in the movies with their hair bouncing out behind them in slow motion.

Of course, as the cruel world would have it, Liam was just stepping out of the common room at that moment.
Originally, he was on his way to an impromptu prefect meeting because McGonagall wanted to discuss the strange messages circulating around school. However, there was an incident in the common room. A first-year student got pranked by some of her meaner classmates, who convinced her a Weezies product was actually candy. Normally, Liam had come across these incidents enough before to be able to reverse them with the counter jinxes. However, the girl had eaten two treats at once. She turned a pale shade of green and began sprouting violet hives. This being beyond Liam's capability to heal, he scooped her up the girl to carry her to the infirmary (but first took five points off of Gryffindor for the bullies' behavior - rule breaking like Brett and Nessie did it he could let go, but outright cruelty was another matter.)
The purple hives seemed to have started oozing, but many people in Liam's position would have been horrified. But like a cop, he wore the badge and had to deal with it.
So he very nearly ran into Brett and Nessie, carrying someone oddly colored. "Oh, hello ladies." he said very quickly, before continuing on his way down the steps.

Nessie closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath before finally deciding they ought to go in. "Alright. Straight to the dorms," she agreed, turning toward the door. As luck would have it, though, the moment she'd decided to turn around, Liam had stepped out of the common room with a rather grotesque-looking first year in his arms. Nessie stared at him for a second, trying to figure out just what the universe had against her. Once he'd continued on his way, she let out an exasperated squeal and whirled around. "I am so going back to the library!"

Brett waved lightly as Liam passed but followed it up with a face palm. The universe wasn't being really helpful here, why did Liam have to show up now, of all times? Brett sighed and shook her head, and grabbed Nessie by the arm. "Oh no you don't!" She decided. For one the library was far too far away.
"He's not gonna be in there now, and mom mailed me muggle temporary tattoos, come on." She said, hoping those would bribe her into coming inside. They could get this over with quickly and things would work out better once Nessie could get into her own room again.
Brett tugged on her friend's arm unapologetically. "Move it or lose it lady."

She'd known that Brett wasn't likely to just let her run all the way back to the library, so Nessie wasn't terribly surprised when her friend stopped her. She just let out a huff and stopped moving. There wasn't a lot of point in running off, really. Brett had a point; if Liam had just left the common room, he certainly wouldn't be in there. Besides, the idea of temporary tattoos was pretty appealing. "Fine, I'm coming," she mumbled, trudging along with Brett.
