She stared off into the distance and he simply let her. He just drank and focused on the warm familiar burn. It was good, a good feeling, made him feel alive and whole. He had too many holes that had to be filled, but he was still young enough to think he could out run them.
"Yeah well, I have a gentleman streak." He said with a little chuckle. He knew he was mostly a cad, and his intentions were never honorable. But he act gentlemanly when it suited him and helped his cause. he wasn't a great person, but he wasn't so terrible. He just never quite grew up. He still acted like a rich and talented youth with all the time in the world. Reality was just too sobering too pay too much attention too.
"And its no trouble, you're a thinker." He knew girls like her, wrapped up in their heads, it may have sounded dismissive but he wasn't conscious of it. He just found the ones that thought too much were usually too inhibited to really have any fun.

Arya knew she was, but the way he said it made her wonder if that was a bad thing. And that made her feel awkward and wrong. "I just like understanding things." she said, feeling like she had to justify herself. Because the idea that he thoughtas inadequate was like a bitter lump in her throat she couldn't make go away. "Helps me make sense of the world." She felt like the atmosphere of the table was slightly darkened, but how could that be with the sun shining so brightly and him inhaling his firewhiskey?
"What are you if not a thinker?" she, sincerely curious now. She heard all sorts of things. He was practically legendary. But it occurred to her, now that she was seeing him just sitting across from her, flesh and blood, that he was real. He was a person. Who are you? she wondered.

Paulo chuckled. He'd never been asked that before. He had never been a thinker, a learner. "I'm a doer." he said. He was action oriented, sport, sex, a good fight. He didn't sit and contemplate the world, that was a waste of time, so he got right down to experiencing it. Life was meant to be lived, and he took that to an extreme. Thinking about life wasn't going to make life more meaningful if you did nothing. Paulo had never given it all that much thought before, but he knew at once that was his view on the whole thing.
"Sense is all well and good but only if you put it towards action, otherwise it seems sort of pointless to me." He shrugged lightly, trying not to seem offensive. He didn't want to hurt her feelings, he just didn't agree with what her outlook seemed to be. She belonged in her house and what did it matter to Paulo.
"Risks are what life is about." Granted, that's what always got him in trouble, sexual and otherwise adventures, but Ms. Spore didn't have to know that. In her case, flying a foot off the ground would be a huge risk, and that told him enough.

At least he chuckled, which meant he wasn't in a horrible mood or anything. Arya liked the bit about him being a doer. She grew up with strong men in her family and appreciated capable guys who could take care of her. Granted she could take care of herself, but most guys were so immature that it was just pleasant to come across ones that were dependable.
But Arya wasn't sure if that Paulo was in that category. She agreed with him to an extent. Of course a meaningful life required action. But she didn't appreciate the implication that just because she liked to think that it meant that she didn't do anything. If she didn't do anything, she'd have nothing to think about. So her liking to think only motivated her to do more.
"Risks are important." Arya agreed. "But they can't be all that life is about. I mean, then that would just be an excuse to be immature."
"Besides, what would be the point of experience if I didn't think about what it meant to me? I wouldn't gain anything. So action without thought seems kinda pointless to me. Because then it's just stuff happening." Arya didn't meant to be killing the buzz with her argumentative tone, but there was something about his attitude that was ticking her off. He didn't seem as attractive now as he did a few minutes ago.

Of course she had a valid argument, but he couldn't concede. It wasn't in his nature to give in, much less to be so serious with a student. He was her Professor and he could take points away for her tone. Paulo didn't, and wouldn't in this case, but he needed this to go back to flirting and small talk or he'd rather it were over all together. "Sometimes you can think yourself out of doing something that you should do, something good for you." But that was his last word on the subject. He downed the last of his fire whiskey and let the glass thunk onto the wooden tabletop.
Since he couldn't think of a smooth segue, he simply said. "But enough about that." It was entirely too deep and useless. He didn't debate things like that, there was just no changing some people's minds, and that was fine with him.
"Are you still in my class?" He asked lightly, knowing she had planned to drop it if she could. Paulo really didn't get why she was so frightened so close to the ground... Then again, she did scrape her knee rather easily.

Sure what he said was a possible danger of overthinking, but that didn't negate her argument entirely. She shut her mouth, though. He still had an authoritative way of closing a subject, or maybe he was just persuasive. But she wasn't going to forget this little debate, or let it go. Something about it just bothered her too much. Maybe that he was dismissive of things that she considered meaningful.
She chugged a quarter of her drink just to busy herself with something, already feeling significantly lightheaded. It was making her feel confused at this point though, and not particularly flirty. Maybe this was all her fault, she thought, second guessing herself. Maybe she was being difficult. He was so seemingly perfect after all.
She blushed again, with the mention of class. "Technically." she conceded. McGonagall hadn't been there when she stormed off to her office.
"But I'm working on it."

Paulo nodded, of course she was still trying. "Its a shame, it would be a pleasure having you around." He knew he couldn't really flirt his way into making her stay and actually flying. His looks and the possibility of him holding her on a broom was hardly enough to keep a thinker like her in the class, unable to put away fear for the sake of her fantasies.
He looked sadly at his empty glass, debating getting more or if maybe it was time to go... He could simply find another woman to talk to with his second glass, should he order one. Paulo hadn't decided so he looked out the window momentarily before he pushed his chair back. "Well I suppose I should go, you probably have things to do, people to see..." It made for an awkward potential exit, but he couldn't sit in silence under any circumstances.

Arya didn't have the heart to really tell him that it would not have been a pleasure to have her around. No matter how good he was, he couldn't be a miracle worker. She was really feeling despondent now though. Maybe she should've given it more of a try. For him. But that was just a passing feeling. There was just certain kinds of magic she was compatible with. Charms, for example, she was excellent at. She never even had to practice. Potions, too, she had a knack for. And even plants in Herbology were peaceful around her. But flying was another thing. Brooms never felt natural to her and they never responded the way they needed to. They didn't listen to her, like there was a language barrier.
Him leaving was also making her a bit sad. She hadn't yet grasped what just happened - him coming to sit with her, the conversation, their tense moment of disagreement. It was all very unsual and Arya knew she was going to be trying to make sense of it all day.
But she wouldn't make him stay if he didn't want to. She didn't like bothering people. What was left was to be as cordial and pleasant as possible. "...places to go, classes to drop." she said with a sweet smile, finishing his sentence.
